"Why Am I Still on This Couch?" - The Influence Question That Changes Everything

The Power of the Right Question

Grab your journal because what I'm about to share could completely change the trajectory of your life in five steps.

This is our final core session - Session #6 on INFLUENCE - and it connects directly to step number two of my 5 Step Clarity Blueprint: "Clarify Your Social Interactions."

But first, let me tell you about a weekend that reminded me why influence matters so much.

The Ultra Experience

Last weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona, I attended my business group called Ultra. It was tiring, but incredibly refreshing because I was surrounded by people who want to do better in life.

There's something powerful about interacting with people who want to improve, grow, and exceed their current limitations. It lifts up your game too. That's the essence of influence - and there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting more. If you want more, become more.

This experience reinforced why it's so important to collaborate with people who want to grow and become more in life.

The 5 Questions That Reveal Your Influence Level

Today's goal is to help you gauge how influential you've felt in your relationships, at work, and in your mission - then give you tools and concepts to immediately increase your level of action and influence.

Consider these questions across all 10 arenas of your life as you work through them:

Question 1: Can you describe the most influential person in your life?

Think deeply about this. Who has had the greatest impact on you? Write down their name and really reflect on their influence.

Question 2: What are the pieces of that relationship that had such an impact?

What specifically made them so influential? Was it their words, actions, presence, or something else? Understanding this reveals the blueprint of true influence.

Question 3: If you could be an even better role model for someone right now, who would that be?

This shifts the focus from receiving influence to giving it. Who in your life could benefit from your improved influence and leadership?

Question 4: What would you do for them?

Get specific. What actions would you take? How would you show up differently? What would you start doing that you're not doing now?

Question 5: What would not happen anymore?

This is equally important. What behaviors, attitudes, or actions would you stop? What negative patterns would end?

The Couch Story That Changes Everything

At our Ultra seminar, I heard Lewis Howes speak about his career-ending NFL injury. After his injury, his sister let him stay on her couch. He was hurt, getting fed, and had what seemed like great excuses to stay there.

But then he asked himself a powerful question: "Why am I still on this couch?"

He realized he could have stayed on that couch with a hundred excuses. He was comfortable, but he was also stuck. That question changed everything for him.

I remember my own challenging time in 2009. I could have let a bunch of excuses keep me where I was - stuck and comfortable, but miserable.

The Question You Must Ask Yourself

Here's the question we all need to ask: Are you going to let another day slip by, another year slip away, without change in your life? Are you going to stay stuck, burned out, or lost, just stewing in that place?

It's so easy to hang onto our excuses for why we're not going to make that change. Another day becomes another week, another month, another year - all too frequently, all too easily.

But what if today was different?
