The Charge Sessions #2: CONTROL — Are You the Captain of Your Ship?

Uncategorized Dec 31, 2025

We're in The Charge Sessions, and today we're diving into Session #2: CONTROL .

So grab your journal and let's do some good work together.

First, I want to wish everyone a happy holiday season. Merry Christmas, and wherever you're at, have a great one.

I've been thinking a lot about ending this year strong and starting next year with momentum — and this topic of control is perfect for that.

You Are the Captain of Your Ship

Here's the truth: We are autonomous. We are the captains of our ships.

We've got to stop giving away our power and letting excuses win the stories of our lives.

Because when we do that, we lose control. And when we lose control — or worse, when we're controlling the wrong things — it increases uncertainty, disappointment, and leads to an unfulfilling life.

This is our good work. The work happens before the great things.

Yes, rain happens on the just and the unjust. But the truly successful have control of their mind, their attitudes, and their emotions .

Today's Goals

Our goals for this session are clear:

Discover and direct how you engage your drive for control
Apply that control in your most useful areas of life
Identify if you're out of control or controlling the wrong things — so you can course-correct

Rate Yourself on Control (Again)

Two weeks ago, we went through all 10 Human Drives and you rated yourself on each one.

Today, I want you to focus specifically on CONTROL .

Here's the definition again. Don't get stuck on the exact words — just give your overall impression:

"I sense I'm in control of my overall life right now. I feel like I'm the captain of my ship. I have a handle on my life. I'm progressing with confidence. I know I can bounce back from setbacks and continue forward with strength."

Rate yourself 1-10.

Think about your last year. How would you rate yourself with control based on that definition?

And then think about these last two weeks since we talked about this. How would you rank yourself now?

Reflection Questions

Now, let's dig deeper. Grab your journal and answer these questions:

1. When you talk about control in your life, what comes to your mind?

What does control mean to you? Is it about your schedule? Your emotions? Your relationships? Your finances?

2. Why did you rank yourself the way you did?

If your ranking is really high, why is that? What are some of those great habits, beliefs, or behaviors that you can apply to other areas of your life?

If your ranking is low, why is that? Let's strategize. What's holding you back from feeling in control?

3. What are you working hardest on in your life right now — what's something you're really trying to control the outcome of?

How is that going? What could you do to improve?

Looking Back at This Year

As we head into the new year, I want you to think about your first quarter — your next 90 days.

But first, let's look back at this year:

What are the top three things you wanted to accomplish this year that you didn't achieve?

And I'm not just talking about physical goals or money. Maybe it's getting closer to your family. Maybe it's spending more time with your sons or daughters. Maybe it's taking better care of your mother, father, or grandparents.

Write down those three things.

Now ask yourself:

  • What do you need to put at the top of your list next year?
  • What do you need to grab hold of and carry into the second, third, or fourth quarter?
  • What do you need to delete altogether?

Think about that. Get decisive.

Everything That Matters, You're in Motion For

Here's a powerful truth: Everything that matters in life, you're in motion for — or you're not.

If something truly matters to you, you're taking action on it. You're moving forward.

And we talked about this last week: Our nervous systems, our brains — they're created to go forward in life.

We need to lay down the weight that weighs us so heavily and move forward with intention.

My Story: Choosing a Better Narrative

Let me share something personal with you.

When I was growing up, my mother was diagnosed with MS when I was in third grade. Financially, things really changed. I started mowing lawns to make money. I had to buy my own clothes.

And when I look back at that now, it was a blessing — because it made me get in motion. I had to learn the value of work, suffering, appreciation.

I had everything I needed. My mother loved me very much, and that was everything I needed.

But I used to play the cop-out game: "Oh, I gotta buy my own stuff. I gotta work this summer. I can't be playing with my friends as much as I want to."

I could have let that victimhood control my life. "Oh, my mom's sick. My dad's not around." I could have made it a big, sappy story.

But that did not serve me. Those stories did not serve me.

That stuff happened for the good, and it made me stronger.

Are You Letting Your Excuses Run Your Life?

So I want to ask you: Are you going to let your excuses and your sick stories — your sappy stories — run your life?

Because they don't serve you. They don't lift others up around you. And they don't lift others up around me either.

We need to write a new story for ourselves.

And what a great time to do that — ending this year strong, going into the next year with a new, more serving story. One that lifts others up around you.

When you do that, you'll discover that your life changes. It's amazing.
