When Life Throws You a Curveball

We've all had those moments when life catches us off guard. Maybe it's a challenging day at work, an unexpected setback, or simply feeling overwhelmed by competing priorities. In those moments, we realize something profound: we weren't prepared for that particular challenge. We couldn't handle the "punch in the gut" because we hadn't built the right foundation.

 

This is exactly what happens to all of us when we're not intentional about our focal points.

 

The Three Pillars That Determine Everything

In my certified high performance coaching program, the very first session we dive into is called "Focal Points." It's designed to assess three critical areas that determine whether you'll thrive or just survive:

 

1. Focus – Where Your Attention Goes

2. Agency – How Much Control You Feel

3. Habits – What's Moving You Forward or Holding You Back

These aren't just coaching concepts – they're the foundation of high performance. Remember, high performance is about consistently rising above and exceeding the norms while maintaining positive wellness, mental health, and vibrant relationships.

 

The Questions That Change Everything

Let me share the three questions I ask every high-performance client. These same questions can transform your trajectory if you're honest with yourself:

 

Focus Question:

"Are there any areas of your life where you feel your focus is being stolen away by distraction or competing interests?"

 

Think about it. Where is your attention scattered? What's pulling you away from what truly matters? We often let our focus drift until we're unprepared for life's challenges.

 

Agency Question:

"Are there any areas of your life that have needed improving but you've been avoiding improving them?"

 

This one stings, doesn't it? We all have those areas we know need work but keep putting off. The truth is, we have more control than we think. We can control our emotions, our responses, our preparation.

 

Habits Question:

"If you were going to be 10 times more successful this coming year than you were this past year, what habits would you have to start implementing now?"

 

This is where the rubber meets the road. Success isn't about motivation – it's about the daily habits that compound over time.

 

Your Next Best Step

Here's what I want you to do right now:

 
  1. Get out your journal (seriously, don't skip this step)
  2. Write down your honest answers to these three questions
  3. Ask yourself "Why?" – Why is each answer important to you?
  4. Get strategic – What's your next best step for each area?
  5. Calendar it – Put your commitments in your schedule, or they won't happen
 

Don't make the mistake of just reading this and moving on. These three questions can change your life – but only if you act on them.
